Short Story 3

Short Story 3

1.Summary

This story seemed very interesting, because in the story there is a family of four sisters two of which wants to get away from home for a while so they decide to take a job as a house servant. The youngest girl is envious because she didn’t want her sisters to leave her alone at home. The oldest sister was off to college at Berkley. So upon receiving the job the two sisters go out of town to live with the people who hired them for the job fro six weeks. They keep in touch with their family from time-to-time by calling and writing letters telling how much they are enjoying being away from home. Keep in mind that the little sister was skeptical about them getting the job, because they weren’t the working type, and the flyer said that the people were trying to hire a male, and only one employee.
But to her (Jo) surprise they did receive the job. They had also met the former house servant who was a Japanese male who didn’t speak very much English. He came from Yokohoma, Japan to America so he could learn English and one day own his own business. So they carry the former servant into town to drop him off at someone’s house that he claimed to know. After about three weeks at the job the girls call home and decide they cant stay at the cabin anymore. So their parents come to pick them up, and upon return home they point out all of the places they went to handle business. Like the post office, the store, and other places. Why they wanted to return home they never explained, but they were glad that they finally were home. Later in their lives they all went to college, but one of the sisters died from a rock climbing accident.

2.My thought on the story

The subject of the story was how two of four sisters were looking for adventure which they found by working at a cabin out of town. But the youngest sister didnt want them to leave her alone at home.
I think the author was trying to show the reader how just because you looking for a way out that the easy way isn't always the best way. and I agree with the author on this particular subject. Because I believe that good things come to those who work hard for it.

3.How the author supports their theme

the author supports his theme by saying " her voice broke and she was crying." and when the girl's parents picked them up they said "lets get out of here." which says to me, yes you may have been in your so called paradise but you didnt get it free. You had to work it.

4.My favorite movie and its theme

My favorite movie is "The Wood" starring Omar Epps. The subject of the movie is everlasting friendship. The theme is one of the three best friends is getting married, but is having second thoughts about being commited because life was so much better when him and his two other friends didn't have a woman to answer to. The producer delivers this theme by showing how they came up to be best friends. the movie starts with one character replaying how he first met the his two best friends in middle school. then the movie elevates into their senior high school years showing what good times, bad times, and hilarious times they had. But after a little convincing they get their best friend to do what is right and marry the woman he loves.
